Evidence of sociality in European small Carpenter bees (Ceratina)

چکیده
Natural history of facultative social taxa is important for understanding the evolution Eusociality. However, data status many species are missing. Social seven European Ceratina bees was studied in Cyprus. Multifemale nests were found five three different subgenera: C. (Euceratina) mandibularis, (E.) cypriaca, chrysomalla, (Dalyatina) parvula and (Neoceratina) bispinosa. No dallatoreana (N.) schwarzi, which sample size also small. We compared nest productivity between solitary multifemale parvula. It apparent that have a higher number brood cells than nests. Per capita equal both types. can conclude sociality common subtropical climate nesting successful strategy.

Understanding the evolution of animal societies, considered to be a major transition in evolution, is a key topic in evolutionary biology. Recently, new gateways for understanding social evolution have opened up due to advances in genomics, allowing for unprecedented opportunities in studying social behavior on a molecular level. In particular, highly eusocial insect species (caste-containing s...
متن کاملBehavioral plasticity: levels of sociality in bees
Sociality has evolved repeatedly and is at the root of the tremendous ecological success of several taxa, notably humans and social insects. Social insects — termites, ants and some bees and wasps — have a wide range of social organisations, ranging from species where individuals facultatively cooperate to form large colonies. In some species, colonies may contain up to a million workers which ...
متن کاملAntimicrobial defences increase with sociality in bees.
Evidence for the antiquity and importance of microbial pathogens as selective agents is found in the proliferation of antimicrobial defences throughout the animal kingdom. Social insects, typified by crowding and often by low genetic variation, have high probabilities of disease transmission and eusocial Hymenoptera may be particularly vulnerable because of haplodiploidy. Mechanisms they employ...
متن کاملEvolution of sociality in a primitively eusocial lineage of bees.
Eusociality is a major evolutionary innovation involving alterations in life history, morphology, and behavior. Advanced eusocial insects, such as ants, termites, and corbiculate bees, cannot provide insights into the earliest stages of eusocial evolution because eusociality in these taxa evolved long ago (in the Cretaceous) and close solitary relatives are no longer extant. In contrast, primit...
